Chapter 12

The next afternoon I woke up alone in the guest bedroom. That was happening way too much of late. It was just shy of 3:30 in the afternoon.

"I hate waking up early," I grumbled, looking around the dark spare bedroom. I glanced up at the ceiling. The sun's oppressiveness beat on me. Why couldn't I sleep until after sunset? Could vampires have insomnia? All I did was pull the covers over my head and curl up. "Mmmm, smells like Gabe."

Gabe's scent infused the sheets. Dane had something to do, so couldn't stay. He dropped me and Gabe off an hour before sunrise, then took off. After spending the better part of five hours in a Wild On orgy, I was surprised to find Gabe still horny. Mortal men had limits, even with vampiric help, but not werewolves.

Gabe never turned down a chance at me in the sack. Others did. Of all my lovers only Gabe and Desiree had never declined my offer. Desiree was my only lover that spent the entire day with me, and was usually in bed with me when I awoke. No one else ever stayed.

Of course, I wasn't counting undead lovers like Boney or Heidi. Being vampires, they couldn't go anywhere either. I had expected to spend the day with Henri, but he vanished with Mercedes and Jason at some point after three. I spent that last couple hours of the Wild On with Kelly, Zeke, and a Trudeau vampire named André.

"Talk about being dead to the world," Desiree said, nudging my shoulder.

My eyes popped open. I immediately realized the sun was down, and had been for half an hour. Falling back to sleep wasn't something I normally did.

"You should be a comedian," I said, sitting up. Desiree was holding a big mug of steaming blood. "What? I expected you to offer up your throat first."

Desiree blushed. "I can't. Boney bit me last night." She grinned wickedly at me. "I spent most of the day in his coffin."

"Oh, lucky you," I said. I sighed wistfully. Boney didn't spend as much time with me as before. Antoinette was hogging his time, and I suspect purposely keeping us apart. "How's he doing?"

"He did great," Desiree said, and winked.

I laughed. "I bet he did! Boney never disappoints," I said. I took a deep swallow, and then smacked my lips. Lord save me, I so loved blood. "Who else is here?"

Okay, I already knew the only mortal was Desiree. No Kale, Dane, Gabe, or Sabrina. Heidi was there, in the kitchen. I had a link with her, and could also hear her banging around. In truth, I was really hoping she'd say Boney was there.

"Just Heidi," Desiree said. "And she's in one of her moods. I don't think she got any last night." She paused to look back toward the kitchen. "If Heidi killed me, would you reanimate me?"

"What?" I cried. "You know my feelings on that."

The idea of actually damning a person's soul by Changing them scared me witless.
